EPG Christmas Party
With thanks to Derrick, Jenny and Mo we had an excellent Christmas Meal at the Toby Carvery previously known as the Nutwell Lodge. We were given a room to ourselves and the atmosphere was brilliant. Thanks Mo for doing the Quiz plus Jenny for doing a Raffle and for the Party Panto which all the Committee took part. It was brilliant, in fact Ian said he is being typecast as he played The Prince in the Christmas Panto Wantage Camera Club put on. All done in the same style but the Panto was called Cinderella, take a look by clicking here. WCPF Kingswood Salver & Margaret Salisbury 19 November 2016
Last Saturday the Club was represented at the Kingswood Salver with a panel of 5 images entitled ‘Alchemy’. Whilst we didn’t make the final selection the excellent judge, Margaret Salisbury FRPS MFIAP APAGB FIPF, had many complimentary things to say about the panel. Congratulations to Elaine, Christine, Ian, Peter and Maurice for producing such an innovative panel. All the panels were displayed around the hall for everyone to discuss and enjoy and were removed for the afternoon event.

The WCPF also have Facebook and they have put several interesting images on this site which you can go to by clicking here and by clicking here you will see our Panel which is more or less the same panel as we entered for the Devon Clubs' Battle; Christine changed her image. All our past entries can be seen by going to our External Comps page in every Devon Clubs' Battle entry; we have always used these for the Kingswood Salver so that they get two airings and different opinions.
About a dozen of our members attented the event and Christine took a few images of the occasion which are below.
In the afternoon Margaret Salisbury gave us a very interesting talk with a variety of her prints and I was particularly impressed with her images from Ethiopia. It was great to see a display of prints all round the hall giving the audience an opportunity to inspect the images more closely.
AV Group 8 November
Tonight's tutorial session at Exmouth Photo Group AV Meeting. Keen students were put through the mill making animations, sound effects and shutter masks. Two hours of gruelling activity to produce a one-minute sequence laden with special effects, but we got through it with no nervous breakdowns!! — Ian Bateman
It was a big thank you to Ian for all the work he put into the session - well received by all and hopefully we all learnt something.
PAGB 20th Inter-Club Print Championship, Ormskirk 6 November
37 Clubs took part from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and the judges were Irene Froy MPAGB EFIAP HonPAGB BPE4*, Michael 0'Sullivan FRPS FIPF and Richard Speirs DPAGB APAGB.
It was an honour for our club to be asked to represent the WCPF in the PAGB Print Championship so we did our best knowing that we were up against some very tough clubs in the Midlands and Scotland. We did not disgrace ourselves, we were roughly 20th out of the 37 clubs in the first round so did not make the top 8 so we had to enter the Plate Competition with the other 29 clubs. The marking 4 band system was used ie each judge scoring 2 to 5. 2 being well below standard, 3 below required standard, 4 in and a general level of acceptance and if you got a 5 it was definitely in being an image that could have a possible award. So with 2 prints getting a 5 and the rest having a 4 from most of the judges we did well.
As Rod Whelans said congratulations to those of you who took part. Wherever you finished it is a notable achievement just to have qualified to participate in the Print Championship. Most Clubs never will!

Congratulations to PAGB Award Winners
Another success for EPG; The PAGB awarded Ian Bateman the honour of an APAGB for Meritorious Service, very well deserved. Ian was awarded his certificate by Stan McCartin President of the CACC and Roy Thomas President of the PAGB. Ian said, they keep these awards secret until the last minute, so he had no idea this was going to happen until being surprised!
Also Sheila Haycox gained an MPAGB/AV at the PAGB Adjudications Day hosted by Wantage Camera Club at Steventon, Oxfordfordshire on 22 May 2016. Roy Thomas, President of the PAGB presented her badge but the certificate will be awarded to her by the WCPF at their next meeting. Sheila was absolutely thrilled to have gained her MPAGB especially as the PAGB have only awarded 8 of this throughout the country for AV.
Devon Clubs' Print & Digital Battle
Again another successful Battle and thanks to Exeter for hosting and organising the event held on 14 May 2016. I am pleased to say that we again won the Digital Trophy for the best set of digital images but did not do as well for the Print Panel. More details on the Devon Battle 2016 page.
I was very pleased to see a good turn out from members of our club its good to see such enthusiasm. Next year Newton Abbot will be hosting the event which is to take place on the 13 May 2017 so please put this in your diaries. We shall have to get a good Print Panel together for this event and again must uphold our position in the digital section.
WCPF Members Exhibition Presentations 30 April 2016
Several of our members had acceptances namely Jenny Baker 3, Christine Chittock 2, Derrick Holliday 5, Chaz Madge 3, Mo Martin 1, and John Wickett 3 acceptances in the Members Exhibition.
Three of our members, Ian Bateman, John Perriam and Sheila Haycox were awarded trophies, ribbons and certificates and were at the event to receive their awards. Ian had 3 acceptances one of which he gained a Selectors Ribbon. John had 11 acceptances 4 of which had certificastes and one gaining a Selectors Ribbon. Sheila had 14 Acceptances and won the Margaret Aven Trophy for the most acceptances, she also gained 3 Certificates, 1 Selectors Ribbon and 1 Silver Medal.
Congratulations to everyone, a worthwhile competition to enter. Please take a look at the Exhibition, it is open from 30 April to 15 May 2016 at Buckfast Abbey and will also be shown from the 21 May to 22nd May at The Bristol Photographic Society's premises.
AGM - 20 April 2016
There were a few changes on the Committee which can be seen on the Committee page and the meeting went well with no contenious issues. Presentations were made to all the Monthly and Panels winners and images are below of each receiving their trophies.
Following the passing of Peter Dawson, our President, the Committee decided that John Perriam who has been a member of the club for the last 41 years should be awarded the Honorary Post of President. John said it was an jhonour and a privilege and he hoped he could following in Peter's footsteps and would undewrtake the post with pride.
The second half of the meeting was a fun competition which was the Chairman's choice. He invited members to show images on the subject called "Fun" and he and Peter Hyett decided from all the entries the winner of this fun competition. John Perriam was the winner with a mono image of people enjoying a funfair ride.
WCPF AV Competition 2 April 2016
4 of our members entered this competition, Ernie and Jean King, Ian Bateman and Sheila Haycox and Ian and Sheila came away with 5 awards between them. We will do better next year!!!!! No joking though, as our club has now formed an AV Group being lead by Ian we are hoping for others to take part next year. Next year's event to be held on the 1 April 2017 so get your thought processes working, lets see some AVs, I know that Ian is working the group to doing Photo Harmony. Jean and Ernie must also get a special mention for, although they weren’t placed by the judge, Howard Bagshaw, he was very complimentary about their 2 AV’s. The amount of research that went in to producing these AVs was phenomenal and they have set a good standard for us all to work towards.
Horseshoe Trophy 17 March 2016
Exmouth hosted the Horseshoe Trophy and I am delighted to say we won the competition. All the results and images can be seen here. A lot of work has gone into making this event a success and here are quotes from different members with their thanks and praises.
Trevor:" Indeed a fantastic result and a great evening. Honiton club who running horseshoe next year stated they hoped they could do as well as our team in running the evening. To that end I must apologise to Mo during the end thanking those involved I thanked everyone except Mo and all her organisation for the event, she did a fantastic job, we won, everything made a profit and it was a great evening. Thank you"
John Wickett: "Notwithstanding the result, this was the best organised and enjoyable Horseshoe Competition that I have been to, those of you that didn’t go missed a treat. I would like to thank all involved, but unlike Mo I do want to single out an individual. I’ve not been involved very much with the organisation of this competition, but I have seen what goes on behind the scenes. This involves a lot of tooing, froing and frustrations, attending numerous meetings, getting people organised and so on. So a big THANK YOU Mo."
Chaz Madge: "May I add it was a great evening, and so much was do to make it work so well. The evening ran smoothly as for the food I could not eat all of mine, just made room for some bread pudding. I think it will be a hard act to follow next year. Well done to ALL the workers and to those whose photos were used."
Jenny Baker: "I second John's remarks. Mo did a fantastic job organising the whole competition. It couldn't have been a better evening"
Mo Martin: "This was not just a photographic competition, as important as that is, but we were hosting the event and once again members pulled out all the stops. The hall was set up long before the other club helpers arrived, the kitchen was buzzing with people preparing the finger buffet and nobody got in to the hall without first buying a raffle ticket. A very big thank you to everyone who helped and to those of you who made such delicious cakes. I do not want to single out any individuals but it would be remiss of me not to mention Jenny Baker who provided us all with such a wonderful finger buffet that she received a standing ovation from the audience. To top it I believe Jenny has also made a healthy profit for the Club.

South Devon League Battle - 9 March 2016

When the final 6 17 point images were displayed Exmouth had 4 out of 6. Dave McH’s ‘Sligachan’ and Sheila’s ‘Jet Ski Turn’ remained at 17 points but Sheila’s ‘Green Crown Brilliant’ came 3rd with 18 points and John P’s ‘Black Widow’ once again achieved 1st Place and scored the maximum 20 points. Congratulations to John, Sheila and Dave and to everyone who had an image selected, but most importantly thank you to everyone involved.
WCPF Council Meeting, Knightshayes Trophy and AV Presentation - 5 March 2016
This event took place yesterday (Saturday 5 March) and the Council Meeting followed the usual format with the audience being kept up to date with the latest developments. Once again Exmouth was very well represented with 15 Club members attending but the treat was to follow. Firstly we saw around 90 print entries for the Knightshayes Trophy where the subject title was “Beginning with the letter T”. The judge was Peter Fry, WCPF Chairman and the best ‘game’ was to go around and try and guess the title. I think the best was a picture of ducks splashing in the water and the title was ‘Twackers’!! Congratulations to Sheila who was awarded a Commendation for her ‘Tarantula’ print and Ian Bateman also for a Commendation for his print called The Tunnel.
Next year the subject title is ‘Diffraction’ and the competition will be held at the Council Meeting on Saturday 4th March 2017, so why not get those thinking caps on. Entry is free and you can enter 1 or 2 prints.
n the afternoon Ian Bateman showed the meeting a selection of International award winning AVs, including 2 of his own. Some amazing talent and skill was exhibited along with the thought that there are some weird people out there (my opinion). Thank you Ian, I still preferred your ‘The Gathering’.

Also awards were handed out for the WCPF DIPIC Competition plus awards for those getting a CPAGB or DPAGB. John Perriam was one of the proud members who received his PAGB Certificate for gaining his DPAGB. Mix and Match v Exeter -3 March 2016
Once again a great turnout from Exmouth but unfortunately the result wasn’t in our favour as we lost 53 points to 47. Vicki-Lea Boulter was the judge and she has a very distinctive style (check out her website). Perhaps I am bias but I think some of her matches were a little tenuous!! Never-the-less the best team won, she said through gritted teeth, and a good evening was had by all.

14 February 2016 - PAGB GB Cup
This is the first time Exmouth has entered this competition and we elected to enter the Large Club Open. 126 Clubs entered the competition from Great Britain and we scored 158 points in total. The winner, Chorley PS scored 195 points, the lowest points being 126. . We were by no means disgraced, finishing in 31st place.
This is a national competition remember, the scores demonstrate though what a difference there is in the way that judges see things, as the majority of our images were the same as our WCPF DPIC and look how well we did there. The judges for the Large Club Open were Gwen Charnock MFIAP FRPS L&CPU; Bob Moore MPAGB FIPF FBIPP Hon FRPS Hon PAGB; Roger Parry MPAGB EFIAP ARPS Hon PAGB.

7 February 2016 - WCPF DIPIC Competition
The results are in and a fantastic result. Please go to the DPIC page for images and points.
The 9 Club members who attended this event were treated to an excellent days photography. 56 clubs each entered 18 images so it looked like a daunting day sitting through 1008 images, but this could not have been further from the truth. The images were, on-the-whole, of a very good standard and our first image was Sheila’s Green Crown Brilliant and it achieved the top mark of 15 points. I should explain for those of you who are unfamiliar with the competition. There are 3 judges who each mark an image out of 5. The judges only have a few seconds to evaluate the image so high impact, along with excellent quality is a selection criteria.
Our images continued to score well and as the judges actually awarded 6 marks to one image it was clearly not easy to get a good mark. At the tea break we added up our total marks and listening to other clubs talking about their totals we began to think we could make the top 6 – last year we were 7th. We then went back in to the hall and the Chairman began naming the top 30 clubs in reverse order and by the time he got to the top 3 our name still hadn’t been called out. YES WITH OUR TOTAL OF 219 POINTS WE HAD ACHIEVED EQUAL SECOND WITH BRISTOL PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB. Bristol came second last year and the winners of the competition were once again F8 but they were only 3 points ahead of us. I do believe this means we now represent the Western Counties in the national competition to be held in Warwick.
A very special mention should go to the following people who achieved medals, ribbons and commendations:

The first few club positions were extremely close with eight marks separating the first 23 clubs. 1st F8; = second Bristol PS and Exmouth PG; 4th Dorchester CC; 5th Nonpareil; 6th Kingswood PS; = 7th Devizes CC and Wadebridge CC; = 9th Paignton PC and Sidmouth CC; 11th Plymouth.
1st January 2016
We are afraid to say not the best start to the New Year for Exmouth Photo Group. It is with great sadness that we have to announce that our President, Peter Dawson aged 76 passed away peacefully on the 1st January at the RD&E Hospital. He was one of the founder members of Exmouth Photo Group which was formed in 1969 and a very active member until the digital age came in. He loved his darkroom and was an avid mono worker producing some wonderful prints.
He will be buried on the 26 January in Exeter which will be attended by close friends but there will be a Memorial Service to be held at the Crediton Congregational Church, High Street, Crediton EX17 3LB at 2 pm on the 26th January where anyone is invited and there will be some refreshments after.
On a more positive note - 16 January 2016
We are now going from strength to strength, delighted to say that we have more new potential members turning up at our meetings which is very encouraging. Our programme so far in January has proved a success with an excellent set of images from the London Salon which gave members quite a bit of inspiration. The Set Subject competition went well last week with a mixture of winners. This was judged by John Baker which was his first time as a judge and I personally thought he did very well. John was asked to choose his overall best image and I am pleased to say this went to John Wickett with his Lloyds of London image entered in the Modern Architecture section.
We have had another successful Digital Discussion Evening at the Rethink Centre run by John Perriam helped by Chaz Madge and Sheila Haycox, all three each showing different ways of doing things, Actions and changing parts of an image were covered. The Print Group also held another meeting at the Rethink Centre on 15th January which went very well.
We now look forward to a Critique Evening on the 20th January where John Perriam will be showing his DPAGB Prints and saying how he obtained this well deserved distinction. The rest of the evening members are asked to bring along either prints or digital images for discussion.
